Solo For Trombone: A POSTCARD FROM PABLO was commissioned by conductor Allan Withington &
The Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band for the Brass in Concert 2025 entertainment contest.
A sassy trombone solo portraying the lighter side of Pablo Picasso and his fascination with
women — both as cubist subjects and as living, breathing muses.
The piece opens with a fanfare in true toreador style, bursting with Spanish pride and snorting bulls.
As a boy, Picasso often attended bullfights, and some of his earliest paintings were inspired by the
extravagant arenas that once adorned Spain.
The fanfare gives way to a calm, senza misura passage leading into Whisper Gallery, where Pablo is
both whistled at and quick to respond. A sharp crack from the bongos ignites the Latin rhythms, and
the young Picasso steps out — into life, and into the world.
DURATION, c. 3:45 min.
